While Michelin came in for considerable flak in January for announcing its new UK stars in the middle of lockdown, the news that the World’s 50 Best Restaurants jamboree is going ahead in Antwerp in October has been greeted by a relieved hospitality industry as a return to business as usual.
Last week saw the reveal of its UK equivalent, the National Restaurant Awards, announced with free-flowing Charles Heidsieck champagne and trays of ethical foie gras canapés at The Stratford hotel in east London.
The list of the UK’s top 100 places to eat is nominated by chefs and restaurant-industry insiders, which might make it Britain’s most self-selecting group of voters but also the one with the most.
