The Wolf Hall trilogy writer, 68, said she doesn't know how much longer the institution will go on, and predicted the Royal Family is entering its "last big era".
Glossop-born Dame Hilary, who sparked a row in 2013 with comments about William's then-pregnant wife Kate Middleton, said she wonders if the Queen is the "only person who really believes in the monarchy now".
Ms Mantel, who is often asked for her thoughts on the royals, said she doesn't think much about it at all, and isn't interested in the rift between the Cambridges and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
