Ministers are under pressure to boost self-isolation support as councils face big funding shortfalls. TUC analysis of 175 English local authorities shows demand for the discretionary schemes has outstripped allocated budgets.
It means that just one in five applicants end up with extra support from these programmes to help them stay at home. Overall, two in five of those applying to the main self-isolation scheme get the £500 grant.
The study shows that one in four local authorities had either run out of funding for the discretionary scheme or were close to doing so.
