Jurgen Klopp went into the transfer market knowing he wouldn't have huge funds to work with at Liverpool on account of the coronavirus pandemic.
The German knew that he would have to sell before he could buy, and that clubs wouldn't be biting his hand off to sign the players he'd be happy to let leave.
But Klopp wanted a couple more players nonetheless to freshen things up in the Anfield changing room, and provide competition for places.
Liverpool signed new left-back Kostas Tsimikas relatively early in the window with the money they had just received from the sale of Dejan Lovren.
