Marvin Sordell retired from football at the age of 28 because he feared the game would kill him. Ten months on, the former England Under-21 striker has warned the mental stresses that ended his career are greater than ever.
Sordell, who played in the Premier League for Bolton and Burnley and experienced the lower divisions with Watford, Wealdstone, Tranmere, Charlton, Colchester, Coventry, Burton and Northampton, made it his mission to help players with mental health problems when he hung up his boots last summer.
He soon discovered that the game is riddled with issues – but when he approached the PFA with a plan of action he was dismayed to find that the players’ union wasn’t interested.
