Manchester United have reportedly joined Chelsea in considering forking out the eye-watering release clause for Villarreal star Pau Torres.

The marauding centre-back, 25, is one of several options being weighed up by the United hierarchy as the Red Devils look to end their defensive woes.

Ralf Rangnick's side were thumped 4-0 by Brighton on Saturday and have now conceded 56 goals in the Premier League this season - only five top-flight sides have shipped more. There is expected to be a summer exodus at Old Trafford when incoming manager Erik ten Hag arrives and the Dutchman has earmarked solving United's defensive frailties as his first point of issue.Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reports Man Utd are discussing Torres as a potential new centre-back candidate.

The Spaniard has a €60million (£51m) release clause in his contract and Villarreal would be unable to prevent a move should United stump up the cash. However, the Red Devils face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
