Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is on course for his worst goal-scoring season since the 2005/06 campaign. Many thought when the Red Devils secured their former hero in the summer that the legendary forward’s return would be a glorious one. While clearly past his prime at 36 when signed, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was coming off the back of a 29-goal campaign for Juventus and fans were at least certain of one thing – goals. But while the Portuguese ace hit the ground running early on in the campaign, his goals have massively dried up for the Red Devils as the season has progressed.
Ronaldo netted an impressive three times in his first two league appearances against Newcastle and West Ham, resulting in collective excitement in the Old Trafford stands.Since then, he has managed just five in 17 appearances. And with just 15 league games remaining, his estimated tally by the end of this season is a measly 15 goals. That is far fewer than many would have expected from the man who recently became the leading all-time international goal-scorer.Do you think re-signing Ronaldo was a poor decision by Man United?
Let us know in the comments section. In fact, Ronaldo has scored at least 21 league goals in every season since 2008/09, which was also his last with Man United before signing for Real Madrid for a world record fee.To find a total lower than his expected tally this campaign, one would have to go all the way back to the 2005/06 season, before he had won a Ballon d’Or or even a Premier League title. He netted just nine that season – and no one will be more frustrated than the talismanic forward himself at his sharp decline.Ronaldo’s shortcomings in front of goal have not simply been down to less clinical.
