The 68-year-old had rescued the lionesses when they were just cubs, from a "canned hunting farm," it has been reported.The two adult white lionesses were kept on the farm where wild animals are hunted.Although his wife, Gill, 65, attempted to save him – he died from the fatal injuries inflicted by the 180kg animals.It is unknown why the lions killed him, however Mr Mathewson's daughter-in-law, Tehri.
