Cold-blooded IRA assassin set to be released from cushy open prison in a matter of days
life sentence for attempted murder.Robert Duffy is reportedly set to be released from Shelton Abbey prison in Wicklow, Ireland in just a few days.Authorities in the North have already begun legal proceedings in a High Court in Dublin to have Duffy extradited back into prison to serve out his sentence for the IRA murder of businessman John Gibson.Should the legal proceedings prove successful, Duffy, who was convicted in Northern Ireland in 1996 for the 1993 killing of Gibson, could be free for only a short while. The IRA claimed the 1993 killing as their own, with the 50-year-old coming before Ms Justice Emily Egan where it was alleged Duffy had breached the terms of his early release from prison under the Good Friday Agreement.Mr Gibson was shot dead in the driveway of his Belfast home because he was the director of a company that did construction work for British security forces.Sources say the move to have Duffy extradited was made because of his imminent release from prison.A source told the Irish Mirror that his release was due "any day now".They added: "But any chance he had at freedom may now be taken away from him if these extradition proceedings are successful."Duffy's release sees the 50-year-old close to freedom 29 years after the killing of Gibson, who had heard he was the recipient of a charity award just hours before his death.Duffy was sentenced to life in prison after an attempted murder on Colin O'Neill on March 10, 2007.Recalling the case, Mr Justice Hardiman said the case involved "sheer evil" after Duffy, who shot the victim in the face in a pub in Dundalk. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here.
