German director Wim Wenders will be feted with France’s prestigious Lumière Award at the 15th edition of the classic film-focused Lumière Festival in Lyon, running October 14-22.

Guy Lodge Film Critic Before you ask, yes, Lou Reed’s rock standard “Perfect Day” does indeed make an appearance in Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days”: on the protagonist’s stereo as suitably ideal sunlight pours into his small, neat Tokyo apartment, before swarming the soundtrack as we head out into the city on a calm weekend afternoon. If that sounds a little obvious, basic even, said protagonist Hirayama — a mellow, soft-spoken toilet cleaner beautifully played by Kōji Yakusho — would probably agree with a shrug. He’s into simple pleasures, not deep cuts. His solitary life is built around the things that make him happy and the work that keeps him solvent. He’s not inclined to wonder what other people make of it. Wenders’ film, in turn, is sincere and unassuming, and owns its sentimentality with good humor.

Though he is still mostly known for his lyrical, America-set road movie Paris, Texas, which won the Palme d’Or in 1984, Germany’s Wim Wenders does most of his best work when he’s back on home turf. The Berlin Wall, for example, provided the backdrop for his 1987 masterpiece Wings of Desire, in which philosophical angels roamed a divided city that was still trying to reckon with the shame of the Second World War. His new documentary, Anselm, is ostensibly the biography of a fellow artist, but it doesn’t take too much imagination to read it as a veiled autobiography, in that its subject isn’t so much a person as the way that life experience and intelligence combine to create art.

Wim Wenders could be the Bob Dylan of European cinema: always around, always the same, always different. Sometimes he’ll arrive in Cannes with a documentary, like 2018’s Pope Francis: A Man of His Word, and sometimes he’ll come with a work of fiction, like his timeless 1984 Palme d’Or winner Paris, Texas. This year, he’s coming with one of each: Anselm, a 3D portrait of artist Anselm Kiefer, and Perfect Days, the story of a Tokyo toilet cleaner. Ironically, Wenders thought he’d have more time on his hands after the pandemic and moving on from his role at the European Film Academy. How wrong he was…

It takes a special kind of artist to draw humor out of the United States' mass shooting epidemic, but Paris Texas have managed to do it with the music video for their latest single "Bullet Man." The title (which may or may not be a reference to Shinya Tsukamoto 2009 cyberpunk film) takes on a very literal meaning in Aus Taylor's music video, written by the Los Angeles alt-rap duo themselves. The clip stars a young white kid who, after a sudden and unexpecting race swapping into a Black teen, finds himself stalked by the bullet of a gun fired by his own grandpappy.

Arlo Parks has enlisted Phoebe Bridgers for her latest single ‘Pegasus’, taken from her forthcoming second album, ‘My Soft Machine’.The song, produced by Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence and the Machine), Brockhampton’s Romil Hemnani, and Baird, features Bridgers singing delicately within the chorus and the fourth verse. The accompanying music video was directed by Bedroom at Compulsory Film.“’Pegasus’ is about experiencing the warmth and lightness of good love for the first time,” said Parks.

Later this month Arlo Parks will release her second album My Soft Machine. She has already shared “Weightless” and “Blades”, and today she dropped a video for “Pegasus,” featuring Phoebe Bridgers.

Paris Texas have shared the music video for their new single ‘PANIC!!!’ from their upcoming debut album.The duo made up of Louie Pastel and Felix, previously took to social media a preview and trailer for the song as well as what they call a “season 2” of Paris Texas music.The video for ‘PANIC!!!’, directed by Bradley J. Calder & Neema Sadeghi, follows the band into a raucous mosh pit.

Paris Texas, a duo spinning the last decade or so of underground rap into their own sound, are back with their first new song of the year. “PANIC!!!” follows their 2021 full-length Boy Anonymous and last year's one-off single "cyanide." The relatively quiet release schedule makes it all the more appropriate that Paris Texas would return with both barrels blazing.

Lise Pedersen “A Sense of Place,” a collection of six short films by young Iranian directors, had its world premiere this week at Copenhagen’s CPH:DOX. The films are inspired by Wim Wenders’ eponymous 2005 book, and the Oscar nominated director – best known for “Paris, Texas,” “Wings of Desire,” “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Pina” – served as the project’s “godfather,” he explained at the festival. Curated by Iranian producer Afsun Moshiry in collaboration with The Wim Wenders’ Foundation, which supports young directors and innovative filmmaking, the anthology takes viewers on a journey that starts in Iran, travels to the country’s southern border, onto a plane to Germany, and ends up in France, where two of the films are shot.
