Liverpool 's new under-23's assistant boss Gary O'Neil has lifted the lid on how a meddling agent ruined his chances of joining the club back in 2007.
O'Neil had come through the ranks at Portsmouth and amassed nearly 200 appearances for the club before joining Middlesbrough for a fee of around £5m.However, he nearly ended up at Anfield, only for the move to fall through at the last minute.Speaking to talkSPORT, O'Neil recalled: "Just before I left Portsmouth to go to Middlesbrough I had Liverpool (lined up) when Rafa Benitez was in charge."I got a phone call off an agent I didn’t know saying 'If you don't let me do it or us do it then it’s not going to happen'."I was like 'I’ve been with my guy for ages, it’s all done'.
