Less than 20% of Brits are in favour of lifting the lockdown – with an overwhelming majority believing it is not safe to do so.

The current restrictions are due to expire on Thursday, with the government under pressure to explain what comes next. A new poll has found there is "minuscule" support for ending the lockdown this week, with just 17% believing schools should reopen.

Of 2,000 people asked by pollsters Oponium, 11% said restaurants should be allowed to open their doors again, with 9% backing a return for pubs and 7% in favour of mass gatherings such as sporting events and concerts.

The results, published in The Guardian, did however find that 35% believe shops should reopen in an effort to get the UK's economy moving again.
