Lanarkshire animal charity opens specialist food bank for pets

An animal charity has opened a food bank for pets at its Lanarkshire base to help owners struggling to feed their four-legged friends amid the cost of living crisis.Dogs Trust is now providing the free service at its rehoming centre on Hamilton Road in Uddingston, handing out pet food which has been donated by supporters.The organisation says it has received a “record number of handover enquiries” during 2022 and that three-quarters of dog owners participating in a recent survey by the charity had noted a rise in the cost of dog food.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Rehoming centre manager Sandra Downie said: “We want to keep as many dogs and owners together as possible and with so many people seeing an increase in the cost of dog food, the launch of our food bank is one way we’re trying to support dog owners through this difficult time.“Over the past few months we’ve received a record number of calls from dog owners who need to hand their pets over to us as the cost of living continues to rise; and thanks to people’s generosity, we have dog food available for anyone struggling with the cost.”The Uddingston centre’s pet
