Fawlty Towers star John Cleese has branded UKTV bosses "stupid" for removing an episode of the sitcom which features racist language.

Heads of the channel have temporarily axed an episode of the sitcom from 1975 called The Germans, best known for the line "don't mention the war".

In the episode, long-term hotel resident Major Gowen, played by Ballard Berkeley, uses the N-word repeatedly during a conversation about Indian cricketers.

However, Cleese has come out in defence of the show, which he co-wrote, insisting the episode was not supporting those with racist views - it was "making fun of them".
