University of Salford first-years we spoke to revealed, some undergrads are embracing the restrictions, others are ignoring them, and many are simply desperate to get on with normal student life.

One student, Joe Hatton, from Rochdale, described how early closing time at the bar had led to people holding illicit flat parties, in one case with over thirty people, in the frustrated climate.

Speaking of his experience so far, the 20-year-old told the Manchester Evening News : “After taking a gap year out of education, I decided that this year was the appropriate time to jump back into things and get on with my life. “I’m 20 years old and I thought that coming to university sooner instead of later was the best decision for me.
