Crews were called to Red Moss Nature Reserve, near to Anderton Lane, at around 12.49pm this afternoon, April 23. Six fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) rushed to the site in Horwich, Bolton, where firefighters spent several hours working to put the fire out.
Eyewitnesses believe the fire, which covered a large part of the nature reserve, burned a patch of ground "around the size of 30 football pitches".
