Huge 6.6 magnitude earthquake rocks Cuba with powerful aftershocks ongoing

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale has hit off the coast of Cuba. Tsunami evaluations are in progress after the earthquake hit 48 kilometres south east off the coast of Baracoa on Wednesday April 29.

The earthquake hit at around 6.30am local time, with aftershocks measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale coming shortly afterwards.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) the quake was located at a depth of 2 kilometres. The news comes as the country suffers from a harsh drought, with temperature breaking records of 39.7C.

Local authorities have been having to supply water to people in several regions. At the moment, there have been no reports of any damage or injuries inflicted by the tremor.
