Speaking after the announcement, HSBC said it would try to replace the shuttered branches with other banking services, like new cash machines and pop-up outlets.It said fewer than half its customers are active users of its branches, and that average footfall was down 50% since 2017 reports the Mirror.

HSBC head of UK branch network Jackie Uhi said: “Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop ups and continued use of the Post Office network."Rather than a one-size fits all branch approach, it’s an approach built around the way different customers are choosing to bank in different areas."However, consumer group Which?

has called for banks to pause all closures, as many Brits face being left without access to cash. Which? money editor Jenny Ross said: "There has been an alarming number of bank branch closures in recent years, and many consumers who rely on banks to access cash for everyday essentials and face-to-face services will be concerned about what these latest closures mean for them." HSBC had last announced a big round of branch closures in January 2021, where 81 branches were closed.
