decorating for Easter might have seemed a rather outlandish and unnecessary concept. (For some, perhaps it still does.) But in recent years, year-round seasonal decorating has started to become more and more prevalent in British homes, with Easter weekend in particular providing an opportunity to shake off the winter for good and welcome spring colours into the home.

Spring wreaths are increasingly appearing on front doors; garlands and egg-embellished Easter trees at windows; and Instagram is awash with floriferous mantelpiece and table displays. In 2021, with the UK collectively stuck indoors, Easter crafts had something of a moment as egg-painting and floral arranging took off.

And a look at retail sales and online searches suggests that Easter decorating is fast becoming an annual fixture.By the beginning of March 2022, sales of Easter products were up 387 per cent at John Lewis, and online retailer Wayfair (wayfair.co.uk) saw a 19 per cent year-on-year increase in customer searches for Easter decor last month.

Hobbycraft and Etsy similarly report that Easter crafts are still hugely popular, with rising demand for Easter trees in particular.Alex Fox, a stylist from John Lewis’s home department, points out that decorating for Easter can be more fun than decorating at Christmas, as there is less seasonal pressure attached to the event. “You can do as little or as much as you like, and I think that’s what is making it increasingly popular,” she says.
