Tax chiefs are looking at 27,000 furlough claims that may have been wrong or fraudulent, it was revealed today. Downing Street said the spotlight has fallen on "high risk" claims which "look out of step with information they hold on legitimate employers".
The Prime Minister's official spokesman added: "HM Revenue and Customs won’t hesitate to take criminal action against the most serious cases. "They’ve already made their first arrest as part of an investigation into a suspected fraud case and a number of criminal investigations are under way." It comes after a tax chief suggested up to £3.5billion in furlough cash could have been paid wrongly due to fraud or mistakes since the scheme launched in March.
