IT was dubbed Britain’s most disastrous Grand Design, but the owner of the ‘nightmare’ lighthouse project has revealed he's now been inundated with interest - including from top celebrities. Edward Short lost his marriage and ended up £4million in debt while building Chesil Cliff House and its annex, known as The Eye, in North Devon. But after 12 years of blood, sweat and tears it has gone on the market for £10million - and One Direction star Harry Styles has apparently been sizing it up.

Grand Designs has returned to the lighthouse once dubbed 'saddest ever house' after it underwent a dramatic makeover.

IT’S the Grand Designs property which has faced setback after setback.  Edward Short and his then-wife Hazel purchased the Lighthouse in Devon over a decade ago and have battled with its renovations - and their own marital problems - ever since.  The stunning Chessil Cliff House in Croyde, Devon has seen Edward pump millions into trying to make it the perfect home - which he and his ex dubbed the ‘Lighthouse’. The cliffside property first appeared on Kevin McCloud-fronted Grand Designs on Channel 4 in 2019 where viewers called it the ‘saddest property ever’.

GRAND Designs revisited the infamous lighthouse renovations on tonight’s episode – with fans all saying the same thing as Kevin McCloud caught up with Edward and Hazel.  Over the course of more than a decade, millions were pumped into turning Chessil Cliff House into Edward’s dream home.  But the Croyde, Devon property came at an even bigger cost – Edward and Hazel’s marriage.  The hope to spend £2.5million came and went within years, with the couple plunging themselves into financial ruin to make the transformation come to life. The eventual price came to more than £5million.  On top of that, they even knocked their own house down in order to invest more money into the fantasy.  When the show visited the house in 2019, it was dubbed the saddest episode ever as things turned even more bleak for the house, which still wasn’t completed and was referred to as being close to “complete coastal ruin”, with McCloud comparing it to looking like a “car park”.

READ MORE: 'Saddest ever' £10m Grand Designs house 'gave viewers second-hand panic attack'The process took a strain on Edward's personal life, resulting in his separation from ex-wife Hazel.Channel 4 presenter Kevin McCloud returned to the site in a show aired on Wednesday evening to check on progress with Edward's art deco-inspired lighthouse.As he made his way to the front door, he noticed the 60ft infinity swimming pool right next to the four-storey-high lighthouse.The breath-taking scenery left Kevin jaw-dropped as he said: "It's the kind of thing only a billionaire oligarch could put up with a coast of Greece - Skiathos to my left, British channel to my right."Inside the house, Edward showed him the office and guest bedrooms, as well as the "storm room" - overlooking a 300-degree panoramic view of the Atlantic ocean.Kevin compared the house to a Bond villain's lair but he quickly sensed something big is missing."There's one room I haven't seen, that's the kitchen," he told Edward."It's not done, and it won't be done," Ed responded, saying the reason was the fact he property is being sold.He was told by the investors that he should sell the lighthoutse and the separate house altogether so that he could clear his debt."It has a guided price of £2million on The Eye and £8million on this, so a combined value of £10million," he added.Since it was put on the market, the house remains unsold and Knight Frank, which is marketing the property, describes Chesil Cliff House as "one of the UK’s most spectacular coastal homes".The property comes with three acres of grounds including a private beach cove and foreshore with panoramic sea views over Saunton Sands and Croyde Beach.For the latest breaking news and stories from across
