Grand Designs' Kevin McCloud ‘dreads’ return to dream home that almost bankrupted duo

The couple explained that they want to build a house "in a place they loved and spent so much time in".However the project wasn't as easy as it sounded when it began being built in 2011.Kevin was nervous about knocking down the 1950s home and turning it into a pile of bricks.He said in a clip shared by Metro: "Edward and Hazel’s project felt it may run onto the rocks from the moment they knocked down their 1950s home."Edward admitted he had a "strange set of emotions" when their family home was knocked down as the builders excavated "deep into the cliffs" to develop "a great complex of art deco maritime buildings." The couple named Edward and Hazel explained that they weren't willing to compromise on their idea of their dream home.

The cost of their dream home "ran into the millions" and it was looking very "cold and unfinished." Kevin said: "The pressures to keep their dreams alive were horrendous." Hazel revealed that all of their money was "gone" having been "‘borrowed" and "gambled".The couple were terrified of bankruptcy.

Three years on Kevin returned to the site to see how the dream home was coming along. He said: "I'm rather dreading it to be frank..." The lighthouse project was labelled the "saddest episode ever" by many viewers after the Edward revealed that the arrival of the recession, building issues and the end of his marriage to wife Hazel had left his dream in tatters.The home is now nearly finished but Edward won't be able to live in it.Edward now has to sell his dream home.
