The Government published troubling new data on the India variant of Covid-19 late on a Saturday night, after releasing a ‘good news’ story to the press about vaccines.

A risk assessment rated the increased transmissibility and the reduced effectiveness of vaccines on the India variant as ‘red’.

It warned the new strain had an "increased growth rate" compared to the Kent variant which spread like wildfire in November last year, hurling the UK back into lockdown.

But it says the magnitude of the change is "uncertain." The assessment also notes a single dose of vaccine is 20% less effective against the India variant than the Kent variant - again, rating the risk as 'red'.
