deprived areas has beaten the odds to secure a place at Cambridge University. Rachel Thomson is celebrating after being accepted to study a degree in economics at the prestigious education hub, which is ranked third in the world.
The 17-year-old, a former pupil of Govan High School, is the first person in her family to attend university after getting three As in history, maths and advanced higher chemistry.
She is now considering a career in data analytics or as an economist after securing her place at Cambridge. The teen was part of a scheme run by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) that aims to widen university opportunities for pupils with limited access to advanced highers.
