THE Ford Kuga FHEV must be one of the most enjoyable and easy-to-drive family SUVs on the road. And if you opt for the blue oval badge marque’s ST-Line Edition spec, you’ll also be able to appreciate some sporty styling inside and out.

The on-board tech, driving aids and creature comforts are all so intuitive that you can make journeys as relaxing or exciting as you wish.The FHEV stands for Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle and the system combines a 190PS 2.5-litre petrol engine, 1.1kWh 48-volt battery and electric motor to deliver power and fuel efficiency.But one of the beauties of this set-up is that you never need to find a charging point or face the fear of range anxiety.

The FHEV system recaptures energy usually lost while coasting and decelerating and uses it to boost the battery that powers the motor.This enables you to drive for short distances without the petrol engine kicking in, while a CVT automatic transmission, operated by a dial in the centre console makes the job even easier.Close by is a button to alter the Kuga’s throttle, steering, gearing, suspension, traction and stability responses depending on your mood or road conditions.As well as normal, eco and sport modes, there are also slippery and snow/sand assist modes for this front-wheel-drive model.

As I had the car during some tricky winter conditions, the latter mode gave me added confidence while I was out and about.The performance stats are impressive, too – the sprint to 62mph is managed in 9.1 seconds and this Kuga has a top speed of 122mph, making motorway cruising effortless.The FHEV is also kind on your wallet as average fuel economy is rated at 48.7 to 52.3mpg, which equates to CO2 emissions of 125 to 133g/km.In common with so many other Fords,
