Football fan in 'life-threatening condition' after collapsing during Sunderland game

League One match between Sunderland and Burton Albion.It became apparent there was a medical emergency in the stands at the Stadium of Light shortly after kick-off on Tuesday (February 22) evening.Play was paused while the supporter was treated for 40 minutes before being taken to hospital.Northumbria Police issued an update on Wednesday morning which revealed the man is fighting for his life.A spokesman said: "Police were in attendance at the Sunderland v Burton Albion match yesterday (Tuesday) when a man in the stands collapsed."At around 7.50pm, paramedics attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition."Police have been stood down from this incident and we wish the man a full recovery in the hands of medical professionals."Play was resumed around 8.45pm after a total of a 52-minute break.The Sunderland and Burton Albion players had initially remained on the pitch, but spent most of that time in the dressing rooms.The hosts informed fans in the ground of a 'temporary suspension' using the scoreboards in the stadium.They also provided an update online, tweeting: "There is a break in play due to a medical emergency in the stand."Everyone at #SAFC sends the supporter our very best wishes."Four paramedics were quick to the scene and were joined by St John Ambulance colleagues and an off-duty paramedic..
