A flood-hit village is still waiting for a Tory minister to visit – three months after she promised to make the trip. Anne-Marie Trevelyan signalled she will not travel to Skewen, South Wales, until August – which will be six months after she agreed to see for herself the devastation unleashed on the community.
Villagers were forced to mop up on January 20 when a disused mine shaft burst, sending a torrent of sludge and dirty water into homes – destroying property.
Eighty homes were evacuated. The Coal Authority, whose responsibility it is to maintain the mine shaft, refuses to accept liability for the carnage caused to homes and the loss of families' belongings.
