The pair had been declared winners of the Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) Championship event when the event's director, Jason Fischer, opened up one of their fish to find what appeared to be a lead ball inside.Fischer became suspicious after noticing Cominsky and Runyan's fish were weighing in heavier than expected, prompting him to cut one of them open and discover the weights inside. The Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office said at the time there was an "open investigation" ongoing into the scandal and the pair have now been indicted.

The indictment says Cominsky and Runyan "did knowingly engage in conduct designed to corrupt the outcome of an athletic or sporting event".
