Farmer grows 200 opium poppies to 'feed chickens as medicine'

A villager has been busted by police after he grew 200 opium poppies on his farm – but insists they are there to feed his chickens and keep them from getting sick.

The pensioner, from Nantong of Jiangsu province in east China, was caught by an on-duty police officer who was undertaking a routine inspection in the area on May 3.

Opium poppies are known to be the primary source to make Class A drug heroin. In bodycam footage, the police officer asks the farmer: "What are you growing?

What are those?" The farmer, whose name has not been given out, points at a field full of opium poppies and says: "Opium poppies.
