England are the best penalty-takers in the world – if you don’t count shootouts. The Three Lions’ 90% success rate drops by a third once faced with the agony of elimination and sudden death.
But our nemesis Germany’s performance goes the other way - improving from 75% in games to 85% in shoot-outs. They famously knocked England out of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96 in semi-final penalty shootouts.
The losses left fans heartbroken and sparked the myth of England’s “penalty curse” among pundits. But study lead author Dr Michel Brinkschult says it’s just a myth and the Three Lions have nothing to worry about.
