Edinburgh Zoo has announced the name of Scotland’s only endangered pygmy hippo calf. The tiny calf was born at the zoo in April, and staff at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo site, have named it Amara in a tribute to the species’ native home of West Africa.The calf’s name, which means grace, was chosen by players of People’s Postcode Lottery who support the wildlife conservation charity's projects around the world as well as their pioneering WildGenes laboratory.Native to West Africa, populations of the pygmy hippo are declining rapidly due to habitat destruction caused by logging, farming and human settlement among other threats.The wildlife charity is delighted with the latest arrival which is part of their.
