Deltacron may be more dangerous Covid strain as we 'got lucky' with Omicron - scientist

Covid-19 variant amid fears there could be more than one type of deltacron hybrid. Deltacron was first identified in France last month, but within weeks scientists had identified more than 60 genetic sequences of the variant.

Although the Omicron variant didn’t prove to be as devastating as some had originally feared, an expert has warned that we might not be so “lucky” next time, reports Wales Online.

Luke O’Neill, a professor of biochemistry at Trinity College, Dublin, says that only “time will tell” if we should be seriously worried. “In many countries, as restrictions [are lifted] and freedoms are restored, there’s a general feeling that the pandemic is over,” he wrote in The Conversation. “There is, however, still the significant concern that a dangerous new variant could emerge.“This happened when omicron arrived, but we got lucky with that one.

Omicron turned out to be more transmissible, but mercifully it hasn't caused an increase in severe disease in most countries where it is dominant.“But this wasn’t guaranteed.
