police after it emerged he had been spending the bank notes of his victims at several Glasgow pubs. Peter Manuel was the second last person to be hanged at Barlinnie Prison in 1958 after he was convicted of murdering seven people in Lanarkshire and the south of Scotland.

Police believe the man, who described himself as 'Scotland’s Frankenstein', could have been responsible for more murders beyond his shocking killing spree in the 1950s.Manuel, who was born in the USA but his parents were Scottish, immigrated to Birkenshaw, Lanarkshire at the age of five in 1932.

The man known as the ‘Beast of Birkenshaw’ would later be charged with the murder of Anne Kneilands - a 17-year-old who died in East Kilbride in January 1956.
