Councillor avoids quarantine after frantic Ryanair flight back from abroad

Maybole Councillor Brian Connollly booked the trip over a year ago to the Algarve. When he and wife Diane flew out from Prestwick Airport the holiday destination wasn’t even  on the quarantine list.

But just before their villa stay ended First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced people returning from Portugal must  isolate for 14 days.

The couple were due to leave on Saturday 5 September - the day the new rule kicked in. The pair managed to get a last minute Ryanair flight to Newcastle on Friday costing £300 the day before.

They then made their way back to Ayrshire. Maybole businessman Brian, 60 said: “We had to leave early to make sure we arrived back on the Friday. “I really wanted to avoid the 14 day quarantine.
