The Foreign Office has advised against "all but essential travel" to the US after President Trump introduced a travel ban on the UK over the coronavirus pandemic.

Yesterday the US extended a travel ban to Britain and Ireland to try to slow the spread of a pandemic that has shut down much of the daily routine of American life.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are advising against all but essential travel to the USA following the US government announcement imposing restrictions on travel from the UK (and Ireland) effective from midnight on Monday March 16 EST (4am GMT on Tuesday March 17)." Brits with journeys planned and citizens already in the US are advised to contact their airlines or tour operators.
