Experimental artist Claire Rousay has used field recordings, text-to-speech programs, and many other non-traditional forms in her music so this year's A Softer Focus, which utilises luxuriant textures and even some melodics, felt like a bold step into the unknown.
Though prolific in her output (Rousay has released two EPs and something akin to a greatest hits collection in recent weeks) A Softer Focus is a perfect entry point to her work.
At its best, Rousay's material takes the every day and elevates it into something greater than the sum of its parts. Take “A Kind of Promise,” for example.
