TV game shows in the hope of winning huge cash prizes. Whether it’s testing their intellectual abilities with tough questions, or setting them gruelling physical challenges, these shows are always a regular feature on our TV screens.

Programmes like The Cube and Total Wipeout proved popular in recent years with their quirky challenges, but during the 2000s there were several game shows which pushed contestants to their limits.

Producers had to come up with ideas that stood out from the crowd, although it’s safe to say they perhaps pushed things too far, creating brutal contests for the participants.

Let’s take a look at some of the most brutal game shows from the past.Solitary ran on Fox Reality Channel for four seasons from 2006 until 2010.In the show the contestants were kept in constant solitary confinement for a number of weeks, with the last contestant remaining in confinement bagging the $50,000 prize.The participants were all placed in isolated pods, and were only able to communicate with Val, a computer modified voice.They were allowed no contact with the outside world, except on a few occasions where they could write to a loved one or communicate with other players via Val.No clocks were allowed in the pods, and temperature and lighting were all controlled by Val.
