British tanks may be mothballed in 'bold' move to boost cyber warfare capabilities

Defence bosses are considering mothballing a number of Challenger tanks as part of radical cost-cutting. The proposal would free up millions of pounds to boost cyber warfare capability amid threats from Russia, China and Iran.

One option being considered by the Ministry of Defence is to scrap plans to upgrade much of the fleet of Challenger 2 tanks and Warrior armoured fighting vehicles.

A defence source told the Mirror “pressures on budgets across the department” led bosses to come up with the potential changes.

The insider added: “But it would be a very big and bold decision, especially as the Warrior fighting vehicles have proved useful in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
