Boris Johnson is expected to speak to the EU this lunchtime for a showdown call on whether to scrap Brexit trade talks. The PM and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will decide if negotiations should be abandoned after months of deadlock over fishing, EU rules and how a deal is policed.
If talks are abandoned Britain could plunge into a no-deal Brexit on January 1 - with chaos at ports, higher food and clothing prices, disruption to medicines and a falling pound.
But even before today's deadline, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab admitted it may slip - and talks may continue beyond today.
He even failed to rule out talks continuing into 2021, after a no-deal Brexit, despite Downing Street repeatedly ruling that out.
