Boris Johnson will lead a Downing Street press conference this afternoon as UK-wide plans for Christmas bubbles descended into chaos.
The Prime Minister will address the nation from the No10 lectern alongside England's Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty.
It comes as Mr Johnson resisted calls to tear up rules for a five-day festive exemption to restrictions amid fears over soaring infection rates in parts of the UK.
He told MPs that the Christmas bubbles plan had been agreed "in principle" with the devolved leaders following crisis talks fuelled by concern that a new variant was behind the rapid spread of the virus in parts of the country.
