As well as possessing the five worst, the borough has another three locations in the top 10 — with number one spot Lever Edge’s infection rate 39 times higher than the England average.
The spike in infections is being driven by the B.1.617.2 strain of coronavirus - also known as the Indian variant. The PHE data, which shows the number of cases per 100,000 residents from May 5 to May 11, comes as Bolton GPs report being ‘inundated’ with calls to book vaccine appointments as residents were also seen in long queues at the Essa Academy
