Unions tonight vowed to fight plans which could see blast furnaces at Britain's biggest steelworks closed and replaced with more environmentally-friendly substitutes.
Tata is exploring the option for the Port Talbot plant in South Wales as it bids to win hundreds of millions of pounds from a government scheme to help big, nationally-important firms through the coronavirus recession.
Ministers have put strict rules on Project Birch cash. They include that funds help meet Government targets of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and that jobs are not lost.
But unions fear the switch to electric arc furnaces could trigger huge job losses at the site, which employs about 3,500 people.
