Big Brother television mogul Neil Balnaves dies aged 77 in freak boat crash

Big Brother and Bananas in Pyjamas to screens, has died at the age of 77 after a boat accident.The Australian entertainment mogul died while holidaying in Tahiti on the Oneworld mega-motor yacht and died after he was thrown underwater while on a small boat alongside the yacht.According to the Australian Daily Telegraph, Balnaves was unable to be revived after the freak accident.The star is survived by his wife Diana, who he married in 1971, and his children – a son called Hamish, and two daughters, Alexandra and Victoria.Balnaves produced a number of television shows including the likes of Big Brother, Bananas in Pyjamas, Water Rats and McLeod's Daughters.This wasn't the first boating accident that Balnaves had been involved in, as a near-fatal crash back in 2002 changed his outlook on life.Back then he said: "How many more houses do I need?

Do I want the jet plane? Do I want another yacht? Not really."There comes a time when those things stop meaning so much to you."After that, he went on to become involved in charitable work, with his Balnaves Foundation donating around £10million.According to the foundation's website, it gives away £1.5m a year "to create a better Australia through education, medicine and the arts with a focus on young people, the disadvantaged and indigenous Australia".Before he made his fortune in media, Balnaves left school at the young age of 15.He went on to run Endemol Shine Australia, when it was known as Southern Star Television.He was also a former managing director of the Australian division of animated production company Hanna-Barbera.For more of the latest showbiz news from Daily Star, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters here..
