Barack Obama is urging Americans to stay united. Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, violently taking over the building, claiming election fraud and protesting the ratification of President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory in the 2020 election.

The former president released a poignant statement following the unprecedented riots, calling them “a moment of great dishonour and shame for our nation.” “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonour and shame for our nation,” Obama began. “But we’d be kidding ourselves if we treated it as a total surprise.”
