A cleaner collapsed at the Arndale with coronavirus symptoms and was taken to hospital - sparking a debate about whether the shopping centre should remain open.
The member of staff had been ill for several days but kept coming into work because she feared not getting paid, it has been claimed.
However, OCS, the facilities contractor that employs Arndale cleaning staff, said 'all staff are paid sick pay from day one of self-isolation, at a level commensurate with their contract of employment and fully in accordance with Government guidelines.' It is understood the cleaner was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary last Thursday with a high fever and persistent cough.
