Coronavirus infection rates are rising in almost half of England, according to new figures. Around 44% of the 315 local government areas in the country have seen a surge in cases.
Despite this, daily Covid deaths and cases are continuing the fall across the country, with the number of fatalities hitting a six-month low today. Barnsley has the highest Covid rate in England, with the equivalent of 195.7 cases per 100,000 people after 483 new infections were recorded in the week up to March 18.
The areas with the biggest week-on-week increases in case rates are: Luton, Barnsley, North Lincolnshire, Ipswich and Barrow-in-Furness .
