A plan will be announced "shortly" on whether to delay this year's 11-plus exams, the government has said. The grammar school entry test - long since phased out in many parts of the country - is still scheduled to go ahead this autumn in several areas of England.
That led to anger from campaigners, who say wealthier children with better home-schooling will have a major advantage. While many are being delayed by individual councils, some 11-plus tests for entry to secondary school in 2021 are still due to be held in September - just weeks after children return to school.
That is despite the fact that for most Year 6 pupils, September will be the first time they have been to school for six months.
