The body of a woman has been found in the canal in east Manchester. The discovery was made in Ashton Canal earlier today (Wednesday).
Emergency services were called to the stretch of water in between the Asda Eastlands superstore and the Velodrome , home to the National Cycling Centre, shortly after 9:30am.
The towpath was taped off and locals said there were around half a dozen police cars as well as an ambulance parked on the nearby supermarket car park.
Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed the body of a 48-year-old woman was recovered. Her family have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious.
