Woman discovers family secret after taking home DNA test to find biological dad

Kristin Shoonveld, who is adopted, bought a test in 2019 in the hope to find out information about her biological dad.But 25 years earlier, the now 52-year-old donated her eggs to help couples struggling to conceive start their own family.And after receiving results from a 23andMe DNA test, the special needs worker saw she had a son listed on the database.Having never carried a child of her own, Kristin, from Indiana, US, told PEOPLE magazine she thought it was a mistake at first.After clicking on his profile, she was stunned to see how much the man resembled her as he was also looking for his biological mum.Although she never had kids of her own, Kristen met Nick, a then nine-year-old boy with Down Syndrome, while she was working.

She instantly took Nick under her wing and looked out for him before she met his mum Grace and the pair got on well.Sadly, Grace was diagnosed with lung cancer and became very unwell.

While she was sick, Kristin took on more responsibility for Nick until his mum tragically passed away in January 2015.Kristen was there for Nick, but she became concerned about his dad Brian.She said: "I was just one of many people who were really worried about how Brian and Nick were going to manoeuvre through life. "I was mostly worried about them just being just overwhelmed with grief."As she spent more time with Brian, the pair fell in love and married in 2018, that same year she officially adopted Nick.The adoption spurred her on to find out more about her family and then she found her biological mum.

But still without answers about her dad, she took a DNA test in the hope she might find him.Instead she made an incredible discovery about her son.
