Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and that figure is expected to rise as the full financial and economic impact of Covid-19 is revealed as lockdown eases further.
The DWP recently announced that fraud and error in the benefits system in the UK has reached record levels, with £8.4 billion overpaid in the last financial year.The DWP estimates that 3.9 per cent of benefits spending was overpaid during 2020/21 - the highest rate to date with some £6.3 billion of the overpayments believed to be due to fraud, primarily arising from Universal Credit claims.
